The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed governance practices across higher education institutions, encouraging university libraries to adopt smart government principles to improve service quality, operational efficiency, and user engagement. As academic libraries evolve beyond their traditional role as repositories of printed collections, they are increasingly expected to provide integrated digital services that support teaching, research, and knowledge dissemination. This study investigates the implementation of smart government within the library of Universitas Riau and explores the institutional factors that facilitate or constrain this digital transformation. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and institutional document analysis to obtain comprehensive insights into library governance and digital service delivery. The collected data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data credibility was strengthened through methodological and source triangulation. The findings reveal that smart government implementation has substantially transformed library services through the digitalization of information resources, improved accessibility, integrated information systems, strengthened technological infrastructure, and enhanced staff competencies. These developments have enabled users to access academic resources more efficiently and have contributed to more responsive and user-centered library services. Nevertheless, several challenges remain, including incomplete system integration, infrastructure limitations, disparities in users’ digital literacy, and the need for continuous professional development among library personnel. The study concludes that smart government provides an effective governance framework for accelerating the development of smart academic libraries while simultaneously improving institutional service quality. The findings also highlight the importance of integrating technological innovation, organizational readiness, and human resource development to ensure the long-term sustainability of digital transformation initiatives in higher education libraries.
Recurring floods on the island of Sumatra highlight the complex interaction between deforestation, climate change, and environmental governance; however, this relationship is often inadequately represented in media discourse. This study aims to analyze how national and international media frame deforestation and flooding issues from a sustainable development perspective. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, drawing on Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which conceptualizes discourse as a social practice that reflects power relations and ideology. Data were collected from 30 national and international news articles published in 2025 using the NCapture feature and analyzed with NVivo 12 Plus. The analysis focuses on lexical patterns, actor representation, and the construction of relationships between deforestation, climate change, and responsibility distribution. The findings reveal significant differences in media framing. National media tend to emphasize extreme weather and disaster impacts, while international media consistently link flooding to deforestation and ecosystem degradation. These patterns indicate that media discourse can either naturalize environmental disasters or expose their structural causes. This study contributes theoretically by integrating Critical Discourse Analysis with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land), offering a novel analytical framework to understand how media discourse shapes environmental accountability and sustainable development narratives in Indonesia.
Forest and land fires remain a persistent sustainability challenge in Indonesia’s palm oil landscapes, particularly within enclave areas, community-managed lands located inside large-scale corporate concessions that are highly fire-prone during the dry season due to slash-and-burn practices. This study examines how collaborative governance among palm oil companies, local communities, village authorities, and government agencies contributes to sustainable fire mitigation in these complex socio-ecological systems. Drawing on qualitative case studies from two villages surrounding a major oil palm concession in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, the research integrates in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, field observations, document analysis, and GIS mapping. The findings show that collaborative arrangements, implemented through fire awareness campaigns, preparedness activities, joint monitoring, and coordinated firefighting, have reduced high-risk burning and limited fire spread across community lands and adjacent plantations. These processes were enabled by structured coordination, knowledge exchange, and resource sharing, while shaped by tensions between customary land-use practices and evolving environmental and regulatory conditions. Collaboration was further driven by interdependence in funding, equipment, legitimacy, and personnel, alongside external pressures such as market-based sustainability certification and state enforcement. The study highlights how collaborative governance can strengthen fire resilience and support more sustainable palm oil governance in the Global South.
The flood disaster that hit West Sumatra in November-December 2025 not only caused physical damage, but also psychological impacts in the form of trauma in children. Symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disorders, difficulty concentrating, and withdrawal from the social environment. Conventional trauma healing approaches often lack creative elements that are appropriate to the world of children. This study aims to design and test the effectiveness of geometric puzzle games as a trauma healing medium that integrates the principles of Visual Communication Design for child flood victims. Using a qualitative approach with an applied experimental method, this study involved 15 elementary school-aged children divided into three groups. Each group competed to arrange geometric puzzles into three meaningful shapes: butterflies, ships and rockets, with the mechanism of one representative looking at the target shape for 10 seconds and then communicating it to the team. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, focus group discussions, visual documentation, and reflective journals, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed three main findings: (1) the process of visual creation through arranging puzzles became an effective means of non-verbal emotional expression; (2) successful puzzle completion rebuilds self-efficacy and self-confidence; (3) visual communication mechanisms within groups strengthen social cohesion and peer support post-disaster. This research provides theoretical benefits for the development of design science in the context of psychosocial interventions, as well as practical benefits for trauma healing practitioners and designers of visual design-based therapeutic media for children.

Forest fires in Indonesia continue to pose as an alarming governmental, environmental, and societal concern. This study examines the context of land ownership transformation mainly before and after forest fires in palm oil plantation activities. The data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observation, and Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping. The majority of land transformations occurred from community property ownership to ownership by local elites, while the transformation from company to community and local elites was also found. Due to the injustice of land distribution, local communities occupy open access lands of companies’ concessions. The deliberate use of fire is a common method among smallholder to clear land for oil palm and for sold for profit as planted land. Local elites benefit from these land transformations; however, smallholders are at an economic disadvantage. We argue that forest devolution and a clear definition of community land boundaries are critical in dealing with this issue.

Heavy metal contamination, particularly by copper (Cu) and lead (Pb), in aquatic ecosystems poses a significant threat to ecological balance, aquatic organisms, microbial diversity and human health. The Kali Baru Estuary in Semarang, Indonesia, has been reported as a heavily polluted area with Cu and Pb concentrations far exceeding environmental safety thresholds, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable remediation strategies. This study aimed to isolate and characterise bacterial strains resistant to Cu and Pb from sediment samples collected from the Kali Baru Estuary in Semarang as potential bioremediation agents. Bacterial isolation was performed using a serial dilution technique up to 10?², in triplicate, spread onto Marine Agar medium, and incubated at 37°C for 24 h. The obtained isolates were purified and characterised based on their macroscopic and microscopic morphological features. Resistance profiling of the isolates was assessed by exposing them to Cu and Pb at concentrations of 100, 200, and 300 mg/L. A total of 32 bacterial isolates were successfully obtained. Among these, two isolates demonstrated resistance to Cu, and 14 isolates exhibited resistance to Pb at the highest concentration tested (300 mg/L). These metal-resistant bacterial isolates exhibit substantial promise for bioremediation applications aimed at remediating Cu and Pb-contaminated aquatic environments.
